They may have deployed once, or they may have deployed several times over the course of their careers.

They have temporary duty assignments, they take classes, and they go to training, all across the country and the world.

“I will never date a soldier” is the phrase I used to tell myself religiously.

Growing up with my dad in the Army, I have always felt that I got enough of the military lifestyle – and then I ended up dating someone in the military anyway.

) 3 years as I talk to more and more military significant others who have successful relationships. Some of us genuinely like it; others of us put up with it because it is a condition of being attached to the person we love.

And I want to be clear: those of us who date or marry someone in the military are no better or worse than any other significant other.

He even flew me out to where he was during the spring semester and that was the greatest amount of effort I had ever seen from a guy to spend time with me.

Every relationship has its own difficulties; it just happens that when the military’s involved, there’s a special breed of inevitable obstacles that spring up.

And I think, when you start out dating someone, you rarely think about everything that is coming down the pike.

They commit themselves to a purpose, and to one another, all for a greater cause. Just knowing that they are capable of devoting themselves to something else outside of themselves shows a level of unselfishness and integrity that frankly, a lot of people in general don’t seem to have. They haven’t all traveled the world on deployments.

But they know what’s going on in the world, because it’s their job to know, and for many, it’s the reason they joined the military in the first place. Articles about, well, dating, often get more views and social media shares than stories about ISIS and conflict in the Ukraine.

It was one of those typical relationships I knew I shouldn’t have began in the first place solely because of the distance, but when we continued talking after he went back to his duty station it just grew into something.
